Synopsis
In the land of Sempera, the rich control everything-- even time. Ever since the fabled age of alchemy and sorcery, hours, days, and years have been extracted from blood, bound to iron, and preserved in coins. Now aristocrats like the Gerling family flourish for centuries, while the commoners live out their scant years in bitter resentment.
And no one resents the Gerlings more than Jules Ember. She and her father were once servants at Everless, the Gerlings' palatial estate-- until a fateful accident drove them away. Now, desperate to earn time, Jules returns to Everless amidst preparations for the wedding of Roan, the youngest Gerling lord, to the Queen's daughter.
Between Roan's unexpected kindness, his brother Liam's cruelty, and the chilling rumors surrounding the Queen, Everless holds more temptations- and danger- than Jules thought possible. The stories of her childhood begin to take on new significance, spiraling her deeper into a past she hardly recognizes and revealing a tangle of violent secrets that could change her future- and the future of time itself- forever.
Loved
- This world. This is one of the most creative fantasy worlds I've experienced. In this world, currency is time, which is found in the blood. When you pay for something, you are giving up days, months, or years through your blood. There are also strange instances that surround Jules where time freezes and plays her other tricks. Time has always fascinated me, so I was riveted by this time-based magic system and its originality.
- The plot twists! I won't spoil anything, but there is a plot twist in this book that completely rocked my world. So much that I couldn't focus at work because I was trying to wrap my mind around what I had learned. I went back and read about half the book over again after this revelation, and my mind was blown. Definitely one of the most interesting plot twists I can remember.
- Jules. Jules is in some ways our typical YA heroine, but I really liked her. She was strong, with spirit enough to spit some fire, but also very compassionate and extremely loyal to those she loves. She also has wisdom and heart beyond her years, which we really get to see in the sequel.
- The Gerlings. These two brothers seem like the stereotypical combo- one charming and open, the other brooding and calculating. However, both of these brothers are deep, and we get to see their characters flourish in sometimes unexpected surprises.
Didn't Love
- No complaints here :)
